The world is a disaster. This is something that most everyone can agree upon. Sure, some people may have fine lives and for themselves they won’t say that, but looking past all that will show the truth to anyone. There are so many problems in the world that it’s impossible to keep up with them all. These types of things have a way of finding themselves in every corner of the world, and they may not exist everywhere, but they affect everything.
Some of the most prominent world issues that prevail merely societally are the big Ism’s. Sexism and racism are some of the things that many people see or participate in day by day. This stuff has been ingrained into our society so well that most are blind to it and can’t notice anything that happens, which falls into either of these categories. I notice time and time again people will say something or act in a certain way that is easily deemed either racist or sexist, but they, and most others, brush it off usually as a joke and don’t care one way or another. What I want to see changed in the next one hundred years is the normality of both racism and sexism in our society. One of the biggest issues with dealing against this type of stuff is the fact that most people don’t actually believe that these things are bad. They believe that they’re just jokes, or just the way certain things should work, or have some other explainer in their mind for the twisted ways that they think.
There are many notable examples I can gleam off of from personal experience, either with people I know and talk to in person, or even just someone on the internet giving their view on things. One of my old friends was definitely someone I can take example after example from. It was always hard to talk to him about his views because he was very one-sided on it. Along with that, being mean to him was a difficult thing because other than being both of these, he was a nice person. He brought up stuff like how the woman he dated for a week broke up with him because she and her friends planned a conspiracy against him and another of his friends to break up with them. Now this is ridiculous, yet I even said that to him and his excuses were that there was no other reason for her to want to break up with him. Although this I know to be untrue from events that had occurred prior to that between them where he was so far in the wrong, and I let him know prior to him speaking up.
Aside from that, on the other end of the spectrum, some of his favorite jokes were to do the stereotypical ‘Asian speaking English’ voice and say racist things. This is another thing I let him know was wrong, yet he said it was merely a joke and that he’s “not actually racist”. He also likes to believe that if you’re in America, you must speak English because that’s the main language (it’s not). There are many more examples I could bring up on him alone, but they would all say the same thing; racism and sexism are issues that are hugely prominent, because most everything he says that falls under those categories are things that go along with what many other people say or do.This shows the main problem, which is that while these are all awful and derogatory things that shouldn’t be done, people don’t actually think they’re wrong because it’s very heavily appropriated into society.
Now obviously, it’s gotten much better in the past couple of years, and has made a huge amount of progress from where it was even in 2008, when people were angry that Obama got the presidency merely because he was black. I remember a conversation I had with someone earlier in the year where he said that they probably shouldn’t have had a black president because he thought there would be a huge uprising because of it. After saying this, he also briskly questioned if the next president would be a woman, but the way he said it was nowhere near the positive one it should be. That’s a big issue, that people believe women can’t be leaders. I’ve heard all of the reasonings, ranging from ‘She’ll only worry about getting new shoes and clothing with her money’ to ‘One day she’ll PMS and blow up a country’. These were all meant to be jokes, but that obviously excuses nothing, because these are still sexist and show the real problem men have with a woman leader. Most of these types of men are worried that she would be a better leader than any of the other men in the past, and they won’t have their misogynistic jokes to fall back on.
I’ve also heard that she would try to do all these things for women such as allowing abortion, making them get the same pay as men, or even just to be equal in every way as a male. And if a woman becomes president, I hope ALL of these and more become true. You know why? Because woman deserve not to be treated the way they are and all men think about is being treated the same way, and they’re worried. Now, this shows that even they believe that they unfairly treat women, but they still can’t admit when they’re wrong, despite all that.
Trying to call people out against this on a one to one scale usually proves problematic as they usually argue against them being bigoted in some form or another. So usually conversations pertaining to telling them that what they say is incorrect and they shouldn’t speak in such a way end up with them getting livid and defending themselves about it and then continuing to do so in the future. We need to push against this to a wide scale otherwise people will think it’s completely fine to do this because society agrees with their viewpoint as a whole.
All in all, society has the issue of having ingrained things like racism and sexism into our society
in such a problematic way that we can’t easily remove. Because of this, we need to go and tell
against people who do these sorts of acts and get them to stop. While it will be hard because of
the cemented roots, if we even just talk to people one at a time we can help end these acts and
make them the bane of how people act as a whole. As such, we can eliminate the way that people
think about these things and the ways that they’re received by the collective community. Hopefully
in one hundred years everyone will treat each other as equals and the world will be a much better
place than it is now.
