Hey everyone, this is my official first blog post! I would like to preface by saying that I am an environmental studies student currently and this blog is based on my point of view. I am the lorax, you could say, I speak for the trees. I love trees, they give me air to breathe. However, I am not the typical environmentalist that chains herself to trees or protests against "the man." I am a believer in change from all angles, political, economical, and social. I believe in education, and positivity. Were not all screwed. Yet. I believe everyone will eventually join the environmental movement by choice or by necessity in one way or another.
This brings me to the ethical question: What should people do to fix the many problems that exits today? Some hippies say love is the answer. Economists say profit and logic is the answer. Some politicians say money and growth is the answer. Extreme environmentalists say veganism and ancient living is the answer. Native Americans say their lifestyle is the answer, with peace and honor. So what is the answer? Well, I don't know about ONE answer to all our problems. I think it's a little bit of all of them, a melting pot of change. I will say that on an individual level, change can be seen quickly. I personally eat a diet consisting of little packaged foods, local foods, sustainably harvested food and meat, (if harvesting meat is the correct term here) and I try and not be a jerk about being "better" than other americans who haven't made a change at all and live very unsustainably. No one will follow you if you act like your above everyone else.
I have started the change on a personal level, leading by example. I choose to be well informed, respect all opinions, and adopt the native american beliefs that we are all of one mind, and therefore, the hippie idea that a little love can go along way.
As this is my first post, I wanted to just introduce myself and how I choose to live. I believe that I am pretty ethical in how I live my life to not trash the planet, but I am curious as to what other ethical responsibilities we have especially as americans, and as young people to the world. I think that the previous generations have done enough damage, and we need to reinvent America's view on success and progress. My point is:all people need to change, but mostly young people need to get off the couch and use their minds. Because ethically, it is our responsibility to keep our race and our planet sustainable for our future children, future biota, and our mother earth. We take so much as a society, why can't we make a change, even on an individual level, to give back to the earth? After all, she does give us air to breathe, water to drink, and OH YEAH, life.
What can you do to make a change? You are in control.
