IS IT IMPORTANT TO LIVE IN DEMOCRACY?

ABRAHAM LINCOLN ONCE SAID:
"DEMOCRACY IS THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE."
ACCORDING TO THE OXFORD DICTIONARY, DEMOCRACY MEANS:
A SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT BY THE WHOLE POPULATION OF ALL THE ELIGIBLE MEMBERS OF A STATE, TYPICALLY THROUGH ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES.

IT ALSO MEANS SELF-GOVERNMENT. THE WORD DEMOCRACY ORIGINATES FROM THE GREEK LANGUAGE. IT IS A COMBINATION OF TWO WORDS, "DEMOS" AND "KRATOS". DEMOS MEANS CITIZENS LIVING IN A PARTICULAR STATE AND KRATOS MEANS RULE. SO, WHEN WE UNITE THE TWO WORDS, IT BECOMES DEMOCRACY, WHICH MEANS RULE BY PEOPLE. THE FOUNDER OF DEMOCRACY WAS A GREEK, NAMED CLEISTHENES, WHO LIVED IN ATHENS AND SERVED AS THE HIGHEST MAGISTRATE OF ATHENS. THE EARLY GREEK CITY STATES WERE DEMOCRATIC, THE RULERS BEING ELECTED BY A FEW WHO HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF CITIZENSHIP. THE KINGDOM OF THE LICHHAVIS OF ANCIENT INDIA IN THE NORTH WAS ALSO DEMOCRATIC AND LASTED FOR OVER A THOUSAND YEARS.

DEMOCRACY IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR A STATE TO SURVIVE. WE CAN REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF DEMOCRACY BY COMPARING IT WITH MONARCHY, WHICH MEANS A FORM OF GOVERNMENT IN WHICH THE POWER IS GIVEN TO A SINGLE PERSON, USUALLY HOLDING AUTHORITY NOT BY MERIT BUT BY PATRIMONY.

DEMOCRACY
1. DEMOCRACY IS RULE BY PEOPLE. PEOPLE ARE FREE TO ELECT CANDIDATES OF THEIR CHOICE WITHOUT ANY INTERFERENCE.
2. THE GOVERNMENT IS UNDER A PRIME MINISTER, WHO IS THE LEADER OF THE HOUSE IN THE PARLIAMENT.
3. HE IS HELPED BY DIFFERENT MINISTERS WHO MAKE LAW AND TAKE CHARGE OF DIFFERENT SECTORS.

MONARCHY
1. MONARCHY IS RULE BY ONE PARTICULAR FAMILY, IN WHICH POWER IS GIVEN ON BIRTHRIGHT INSTEAD OF MERIT.
2. PEOPLE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE THEIR POINT OF VIEW ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE GOVERNMENT.
3. PEOPLE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ELECT ANY CANDIDATE OF THEIR CHOICE.
4. LAWS ARE IN THE HAND OF ONE PERSON WITHOUT ANY SUGGESTION OF OTHER PEOPLE.

AS STATED ABOVE, DEMOCRACY IS IMPORTANT FOR A COUNTRY. THOUGH SOME OF THE COUNTRIES STILL ARE UNDER A MONARCH, THOSE ARE NOT ABSOLUTE MONARCHS AND THEY HAVE LIMITED POWERS. WHICH IS CALLED CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY. THIS MEANS THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO RULE AS A SOLE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COUNTRY OR STATE.

ARISTOTLE QUOTED:
"DEMOCRACY IS WHEN THE INDIGENT AND NOT THE MEN OF THE PROPERTY, ARE THE RULERS."

DEMOCRACY IS NOT JUST RULE BY PEOPLE, IT IS WORKING FOR THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE. A COUNTRY CANNOT WORK UNTIL THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THERE ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO MAKE A DECISION. DEMOCRACY IS IMPORTANT FOR A COUNTRY BECAUSE WHEN A COUNTRY IS UNDER DEMOCRACY, THE POLITICIANS ARE ANSWERABLE TO THE PUBLIC. ANOTHER BENEFIT OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL. WHETHER THEY ARE POLITICIANS, MINISTERS OR ORDINARY PEOPLE, THE PUBLIC. THEY ARE NOT SUPERIOR OVER ONE ANOTHER. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT THE PEOPLE CAN REJECT THOSE WHO ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK. IN MONARCHY, THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. TRUE DEMOCRACY REPRESENTS THE INTERESTS OF ALL CLASSES OF PEOPLE, THE RICH, THE MIDDLE CLASSES AND THE POOR.

IN DEMOCRACY, WE DON'T JUST NEED GOOD LEADERS, WE NEED GOOD PUBLIC. A LEADER CAN NEVER SUCCEED IF THE PUBLIC ARE AGAINST HIM. AND, WHO HASN'T HEARD THAT, "WHEN THE PUBLIC IS GOOD, WHEN THEY KNOW THEIR RIGHTS, WHEN THEY KNOW WHO A TRUE LEADER IS, THEY CAN GET A PERSON WHO CAN CHANGE THEIR LIVES INTO SOMETHING BETTER."

IT IS IMPORTANT TO LIVE IN DEMOCRACY BECAUSE THEN THEY HAVE FREE PARLIAMENTS, THEY HAVE FREE JUDICIARIES, WHICH CAN MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS WITHOUT ANY INTERFERENCE OF THE GOVERNMENT.

DEMOCRACY GIVES PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO SHOW PATRIOTISM. IT GIVES THEM FREEDOM OF RIGHTS, FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND A COMFORTABLE LIFE. THOUGH DEMOCRACY DOES NOT DIRECTLY EFFECT THE ECONOMY OF A COUNTRY, IT DOES EFFECT ITS GROWTH.
DEMOCRACY NOT ONLY EFFECTS THE ECONOMY, IT ALSO EFFECTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY, AND GREATLY IT DOES SO.

WE CAN NOTICE IT BY THIS GREAT QUOTE OF QUAID-E-AZAM MUHAMMAD ALI JINNAH:
"DEMOCRACY IS IN THE BLOOD OF MUSALMANS,WHO LOOK UPON COMPLETE EQUALITY OF MANHOOD [MANKIND]...[AND] BELIEVE IN FRATERNITY, EQUALITY AND LIBERTY."

YOU SEE, DEMOCRACY IS THE STRUCTURE OF GOVERNMENT IN WHICH EVERYONE, RICH OR POOR IS GIVEN A CHANCE. IN WHICH THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ORDINARY PEOPLE AND THE AFFLUENT PEOPLE.

IT IS MORE THAN JUST EQUALITY. IT IS ABOUT THE UNITY OF A NATION. IN MONARCHY, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE GIVEN DIFFERENT RANKS AND THEY ARE BELIEVED TO BE SUPERIOR OVER OTHER BEINGS.

IF WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT DEMOCRACY'S HISTORY, WE ALSO COME TO KNOW THAT EVEN THOUGH THE BEGINNINGS OF DEMOCRACY WERE CRUCIAL, BECAUSE WOMEN WERE NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE AND ONLY A FEW COULD ELECT THEIR LEADER WHO HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF CITIZENSHIP. BUT, SEVERAL CENTURIES LATER, DEMOCRACY REVIVED INTO FULL VIGOUR DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE PEOPLE WERE CONSTANTLY BEING CRITICIZED FOR BEING UNDER PRIVILEGED AS A REACTION AGAINST AUTOCRATIC MONARCHS.

DEMOCRACY IS NOT JUST IMPORTANT, BUT NECESSARY FOR THE PROGRESS OF A COUNTRY. IN DEMOCRACY, IT IS PEOPLE WHO SELECT THE PERSON TO RULE HIM, NOT JUST SOME SELECTED MEMBERS WHO VOTE FOR THEIR OWN CANDIDATE. DEMOCRACY HAS NOT NOW REMAINED A WANT BUT IS CONSTANTLY BECOMING A NEED FOR EVERY COUNTRY TO REACH A RANK IN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES ARE GIVEN MUCH RESPECT.

IF WE SEE IT FROM THE RELIGIOUS POINT OF VIEW, IN MANY WAYS IT IS SIMILAR TO KHILAFAT. IN KHILAFAT, THE PUBLIC SELECT THEIR OWN LEADER, SAME HAPPENS IN DEMOCRACY. THIS A MAJOR SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE TWO TYPES OF GOVERNMENTS. LIKE, THE CALIPHS OF ISLAM. THEY DID'NT BECOME CALIPHS UNTIL THEY DIDN'T CONFIRM THE OPINION OF THE PEOPLE, UNTIL THEY WERE NOT SURE THAT THE PUBLIC REALLY DID WANT THE SPECIFIC CALIPH TO RULE THEM. IT IS BECAUSE THEY WERE CONCERNED WITH THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE.

ALSO, IF WE GIVE A LITTLE THOUGHT AT DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES, WE COME TO A RESULT THAT DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES ARE BECOMING POWERFUL DAY BY DAY. MANY COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD STRUGGLED FOR DEMOCRACY. WHY DID THEY DO SO? BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THEY KNEW THAT DEMOCRACY IS THE FORM OF GOVERNMENT IN WHICH A POOR IS NOT LOOKED DOWN UPON WITH GREAT DISGUST. THEY ARE SEEN AS AN EQUAL OPPONENT OF THE RICH. BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT THEY COULD LIVE IN FREEDOM, WITHOUT ANY FEAR OF GIVING PROTOCOL TO THE RICH OR TO HIGH GRADED OFFICIALS.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT DEMOCRACY IS FOR US. IT IS FOR OUR WELFARE. BECAUSE DEMOCRACY STATES:
"SUPREME POWERS SHOULD BE INVESTED IN THE PEOPLE AND EXERCISED BY THEM OR BY THEIR ELECTED CANDIDATES UNDER A FREE ELECTORAL SYSTEM OR MANNER."

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW FAMOUSLY SAID:

"DEMOCRACY IS A DEVICE THAT ENSURES THAT WE SHALL BE GOVERNED NO BETTER THAN WE DESERVE."

IT MEANS THAT THE DECISION OF PEOPLE IS WHAT MAKES IT RIGHT OR WRONG. IF WE SELECT THE WRONG LEADER, WE WILL, OF COURSE HAVE TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES. OUR DECISION IS WHAT DECIDES OUR FATE.

DEMOCRACY IS IMPORTANT, IT IS A NEED. IT HAS NO LONGER REMAINED A WANT FOR THE SOCIETY TO MOVE IN A PROGRESSIVE MANNER. IMPORTANCE OF DEMOCRACY CAN BE SEEN BY COUNTING THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES WHO HAVE STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY. AND THE LIST IS ENDLESS.

COUNTRIES OF EUROPE, AFRICA AND ASIA HAVE STRUGGLED FOR DEMOCRACY. WHY? BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO LIVE THEIR LIFE IN FREEDOM, IN LIBERTY.

SO, PEOPLE, THOSE WHO ARE AGAINST DEMOCRACY, I WOULD LIKE TO RAISE A QUESTION!
WE AS PEOPLE, AS PUBLIC, ARE NOT REALLY MUCH CONCERNED IN WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD. BUT ONE THING WE KNOW FOR CLEAR IS THAT DEMOCRACY IS NOT JUST BECOMING THE ROOT OF POWER, BUT A VOICE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL RACES. SO WHY, DO YOU PREFER MONARCHY ON DEMOCRACY? WHEN MONARCHY IS JUST CAUSING CHAOS IN A COUNTRY AND WHEN MONARCHY IS NOT LETTING PEOPLE RAISE THEIR ISSUES, THEIR RIGHTS, THEIR PROTESTS. WHEN THE MONARCH'S SUPPORTERS ARE ONLY THE RICH, BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE SUPERIOR, AND THIS FEELING OF SUPERIORITY IS WHAT MAKES THEIR HEARTS POLLUTED! HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO SELFISH AS TO BELIEVE IN MONARCHY AS BEING THE ABSOLUTE RECOVERY FROM ALL CONTAMINATION? I KNOW I AM A BIT HARSH AT THIS POINT BUT WE ALL HAVE TO FACE REALITY, RIGHT? I JUST HOPE FOR THE BEST.

IN THE END, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY;
GREAT PEOPLE ARE NOT JUST AUTHORS. THEY ARE NOT JUST PHILOSOPHERS. THEY ARE NOT JUST POLITICIANS. THEY ARE LEADERS WHO NOT ONLY DO SOMETHING TO EARN A LIVING, BUT TO RAISE VOICES IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PUBLIC, EITHER IT IS WITH BOOKS, BY THEORIES OR BY PRACTICE...!

FAMOUS PEOPLE SAID FAMOUS THINGS:
SOME OF THEM ARE WRITTEN BELOW, WHICH ARE RELATED TO DEMOCRACY:
1. "I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE IMPORTANCE OF DEMOCRACY, NOT ONLY AS THE ULTIMATE GOAL, BUT ALSO AS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE PROCESS."
-DALAI LAMA
2. "I AM TIRED OF HEARING IT SAID THAT DEMOCRACY DOESN'T WORK. OF COURSE IT DOESN'T WORK. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK IT."
-ALEXANDER WOOLLCOTT
