Is it important to live in a democracy? #essaycontest2018

In today's world of globalization, liberalistion and privatization,'Democracy'or as called by Abraham Lincoln as 'the government of  the people, for the people and by the people' is the most stable form of government. Democracy ,the most popular form of government in today's modern era, is better than any other form of government such as monarchy, dictatorship, anarchy or oligarchy. Democracy is derived from Greek word 'Demos' meaning people and 'Cratia' meaning rule. Democracy means People's Rule. Democracy is the form of government that empowers people through their elected representatives. The government elected is 'People's servant' and serves to fulfil the aspirations and goals of the nation. If we consider Democracy's importance  morally we note the following points-

  • It promotes equality among citizens
  • It enhances the dignity of people
  • It improves the quality of decision making
  • It provides a method to resolve conflicts
  • It allows room to correct mistates
  • It provides us with rights

Over a hundred countries of the world today claim and practice some kind of democratic politics. Our interest and fascination for democracy often pushes into taking a position that democracy can address all socio-economic and political problems.Democracy is the best possible alternative as

Democracy produces a government that is accountable to citizens and responsive to the needs and expectations of the citizens

Deliberation and Negotiation

.Although, democracy is not very quick and efficient in decision making and implementation but is based on the idea of deliberation and negotiation.

Proper Procedures

The decisions are made after following proper procedures and are thus more acceptable and effective. The cost of time that democracy pays is worth it.We can even examine if proper norms or procedures are followed or  not by giving Right to Information to citizens.

Free , Fair and Regular Elections

Elections are the Carnival of democracy. Democracy has features like free , fair and regular elections; open public debate on policies and legislations and rights to the citizens.

Legitimate Government

It provides a legitimate government. It has an overwhelming support. It has ability to generate its own support.

Reduction of Inequality and Poverty

Trend show that democracy reduces economic disparities. They are based on political quality. They are keen to address the question of poverty as we would expect them to.

Peaceful and Harmonious Life

Democracy is best suited to produce this outcome. It has ability to handle differences , divisions, and conflicts is thus a definite plus point of democratic regime

Not  Simply Majority Rule

Democracy should not be understood simply as majority  rule as mojority always needs to work  with the minority so that government functions to represent the general view. It also means that majority and minority views are not permanent. Rule by majority in democracy means that in case of every decision or election , different persons and groups form a majority.

Dignity and Freedom of citizens

It promotes dignity.Women struggles all over the world have gained recognition in democracies because they have an ideal of acceptance of new ideas.

What is most distinctive about democracy is that its examination never gets over.As it passes on test ,produces another test .As people get some benefits of democracy, they ask for more and want to make democracy even better. They come up with more expectations and many complaints . The fact that people are complaining is itself a testimony to the success of the democracy. This is a clear evidence that one,s status is raised form 'subject' to 'citizen'.

So considering all the alternatives available in today's world , we see that the status and position of a citizen is established as powerful ruler governing himself only in 'Democracy'.It is the ultimate Citizens' Rule.So , democracy is the  best possible and most accepted alternative. It is the most important form of government from the view of a concerned and empowered citizen.
