Essay Topic: Is it Important to live in a democracy ?
No doubt, today our world is facing many obstructions and impediments in the form of multifarious concerns. Every nation is at sixes and sevens and in the state of topsy-turvy. In order to tackle such gargantuan issues, there is a need of well-ordered manifestation of government which can provide stability in all corridors of life. That efficient and systematized form of government is democracy which provides the right to emancipation, fabricates room of opportunities and dispenses sense of reliability to every citizen prevailing in any nook and corner of the world.
According to the Britannica Encyclopedia the expression democracy is derived from the concoction of two Greek words demos which means people and Kratos means rule. Literally, it can be elucidated as rule by the people. Generally, it can be interpreted as a framework of government in which supreme authority is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
Democracy is an indispensable mode of government because it believes in an inclusive society which is based on egalitarianism. Most importantly, it ensures the engagement of even marginalized and impoverished citizens in decision making structure of the country. Moreover, it gives uniform scope of opportunities to each and every one to prefer their representative according to their perspective and viewpoint.
Likewise, it curbs the barbaric and ferocious monopoly of any authority. It does not provide any favor to any distinct chieftain or tyrant who can run the state of the affairs by administering in-efficacious policies. Because, in other bootless forms of government leverage and domination is concentrated in the hands of single person who orchestrate the administration irrespective of people inclination. Therefore, the people do not have any correlation with administration.
In the same way, democracy imparts political consciousness among the folks because they are steered to partake in polity affairs. For instance, during the time of elections political parties advocate their manifestos and policies in support of their candidate through public gatherings, demonstrations, television, radio, posters and orations by their premiers to win public favor. As a result, these whole set of operations and exercises add on more proficiency and awareness about politics among the masses.
Above all, in democratic system the folks are unbound and independent to vote for their bigwigs. Therefore, uncherished image of their decided leader might lead to cessation or impeachment. Needless to say that keeping in mind those aspects and considerations, leaders face the persistent compulsion to bring change in their respective areas.
If we cast a brief look on existing countries in the realm of democratic norms, we can gauge that the countries with prudent democratic authority are reaching the apex of success in multifaceted dimensions of life. We can take the example of country like Norway which is one of the world top ranked democratic state, where there is something unique about their culture that says that it is obligatory for everyone to vote. Due to their pragmatic mindset, they have quality education, better healthcare system, advanced infrastructure development and freedom to enjoy quality life. Even though some anti-democratic and dictatorial countries like China have proved that democratic governments tend to foster a more sturdy and inclusive economic progression. Because, societies in which gratuitous and fair minded elections are held have direct correlation with higher per capita income. On the contrary, autocratic or authoritarian governments tend to put an embargo on broad segments of the population from contribution in any economic activity. As a consequence, economic policy does not comply with all the generated capital which in turn to become a tribulation and adverse setback for general public.
Another paramount aspect of democracy is its legal system where there is existence of an expeditious trial and unbiased jury. A democratic system fosters approbation for human rights and ensures that all people are impartially tried and given the opportunity to safeguard themselves. The rights of the accused are further cushioned in democratic society by guaranteeing that a convicted person will not be subjected to maltreatment or torment. While in other forms of government these rights are not conceded or taken away at the idiosyncrasy of the ruler.
The preeminent thing is that every democracy has a peculiar configuration which lays some set of procedures for carrying out the spadework of the government. Unlike a monarchy, in a democracy no laws can be proceeded without the concurrence of the predominant group. Any law moved must adapt to the prescriptive recommendations of the constitution, and if a law does not meet this desideratum, it can be confronted in a court of law and abrogated. Before passing any law an authorized session takes place in the parliament, in which the elected representatives consider the miscellaneous facets of the law. This procedure ensures unabridged transparency and accountability in decisiveness and intercept any bigoted or partisan law from being passed.
A democracy also makes sure that everyone’s integrity is protected. Since the government is devised on the basis of a majority’s course of action so everyone’s expectations and outlooks are taken care of. If any conflict or rift arises, the matter is solved through collaboration and mutual consensus. If anyone who boosts violence or any other criminal activity he or she is severely punished by the law which ultimately gives the reflection that the democracy espouses serenity, tolerance and consonance.
All in all, democracy is very prime ingredient to run the affairs of the incumbent globalization and its facets. Without democracy, we cannot construct the society where everyone can live their lives without any stumbling block, where there is an ambition to back each other in thick and thin, where there is a proliferation of tenderness for the best survival, where there is acceptance of justice for desperados and where there is hope to see the progression in every field of life because Hellen keller well said that “optimism is the faith that leads to achievements. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
