" I am sentient. When I think about who I am, there's one aspect above all that can't be ignored. I am a sentient being. I experience my existence - I feel like I'm here, looking out on the world through these eyes, perceiving this Technicolor show from my own center stage. Let's call this feeling consciousness and awareness.
Each individual brain is embedded in a world of other brains. Across the space of a dinner table, or length of a lecture hall, or the reach of the internet, all the human neurons on the planet are influencing one another, creating a system of unimaginable complexity.
Each decision involves our past experiences (stored in states of our body) as well as the present situation.......But there's one more part of the story of decisions - predictions about the future.
Normal brain function depends on the social web around us. Our neurons require other people's neurons to thrive and survive.
Who we become is up to us."
