On behalf of Estoril Political Forum
We have the pleasure of inviting you to the Estoril Political Forum 2016, dedicated to the theme "Democracy and its Enemies: New Threats, New Possibilities", held in association with one of our main partners, the International Forum for Democratic Studies, which publishes the distinguished quarterly Journal of Democracy. This timely debate is inspired by the same commitment to liberal democracy and the West that led Karl Popper to write his famous book, The Open Society and its Enemies, more than 70 years ago.
In the very same spirit, our 24th International Annual Meeting in Political Studies will discuss the resurgence of authoritarianism around the world and how the West and its multilateral institutions, namely NATO and the EU, should respond to this problem. Beyond these external threats, we will focus on the internal challenges faced by Democracy today, with a special emphasis on how one of its fundamental values fares in this new interconnected world: Free Speech. We will also dedicate special attention to how these and other threats present themselves among the English-speaking, the Portuguese-speaking and the Spanish-speaking peoples. And, just a week after the British people have their say on their EU membership, we will reflect on the aftermath of the UK referendum. For more information on our program, please see here.
If you want to be a part of this open debate on political science and international relations, together with the scholars, policy experts, businessmen, opinion leaders, journalists and students that we gather every year, just sign up here.
With our best wishes,
The Institute for Political Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal
