HOV lanes, or restricted lanes, are lanes meant for people that are carpooling to and from downtown. Pittsburgh has such a lane from Perrysville Avenue to the downtown area via Interstate-279 (entrances and exits to the lane are not just on Perrysville Ave). This picture shows the intersection of Bedford Avenue (in the Pittsburgh Downtown) onto I-279. In the morning the lane is restricted to only cars driving towards downtown and vice versa in the evening after work hours. As the picture shows, the lane is restricted only to vehicles with 2 or more people. Because this lane has less vehicles, this incentivizes workers in the downtown area to carpool in the HOV lane, saving not only time but also fuel, and thus emitting less carbon emissions. HOV lanes are a step forward in transportation to reducing climate change.
