This photo was taken in Pittsburgh PA in mid December. As winter approaches, the snow and cold hit hard. Characteristic to the Pittsburgh area, snow comes as regularly as once a day. Few know that Pittsburgh gets more rain than Seattle, thus causing snow to be a daily part of Pittsburgher lives. Recent temperatures mark an unseasonable cold streak that brings temperatures to rare lows not seen since the 1960's and 70's. Some say the planet is warming, but perhaps there are cycles to these warm and cold times that slowly shift the seasons and their severity.

Don't miss this valuable discussion.

Global Ethics Weekly: Science Fiction, Micro-democracy, & Information, with Malka Older

Malka Older has spent time as an aid worker in Darfur, Indonesia, and Japan, as was discussed in last week's podcast, but she also has another role: science fiction novelist. Her latest book, "State Tectonics," is the third in a series that explores the concepts of "micro-democracy" and a "global information management bureacracy" in the near future. How have separatists from East Timor to Catalonia influenced Older's novels?
