It is a chaotic political moment. While the right faces the deterioration of libertarianism into populist demagoguery, the left has to admit that American liberalism has fallen under the spell of identity politics with disastrous consequences. How can this nation rebuild a sense of common feeling among Americans, and a sense of duty to each other? How can we build a government that helps all Americans?
Mark Lilla is professor of humanities at Columbia and a prize-winning essayist for The New York Review of Books and other publications.
