Carnegie Council announces its third annual Global Ethics Day (#globalethicsday2016) on October 19, 2016.

Inspired by Earth Day, Global Ethics Day provides an opportunity for organizations around the world to hold events exploring the meaning of ethics in international affairs.

We encourage academic institutions everywhere to use this day to hold programs focusing on ethics, such as lectures, film screenings, debates, or panel discussions. We welcome your ideas. In the tradition of a "teach-in" model, these events will be run by each institution as it sees fit while being part of a worldwide Global Ethics Day.

Carnegie Council will promote Global Ethics Day activities on its online community platformwww.globalethicsnetwork.org and share any resources that are created. Course and lecture ideas can be found on Carnegie Council's website here.

Sixty-eight institutions worldwide participated last year. To see the list, click here. Here are just a few examples of events in 2015: Carnegie Council co-hosted an event on Feeding the Planet; Texas Tech University (TTU) Ethics Center held a filibuster on legal, environmental and migration ethics; and globalethics.net chose responsible leadership as its main theme.

"Although it's only a couple of years old, Global Ethics Day is gaining momentum every year," says Carnegie Council Senior Fellow Devin Stewart. "We hope you'll join us in 2016 and host an event on whatever aspect of global ethics concerns you most. Carnegie Council's slogan is 'Ethics Matter.' Help us make this a reality."

If you plan to hold a Global Ethics Day event, please let us know so we can promote it along with other events happening that day. Please contact Alex Woodson at awoodson@cceia.org and let us add your name to the list!

Fight for Liberty, with Max Boot, Philip Bobbitt, Garry Kasparov, & Bret Stephens

We live in a time when liberal democracy is on the defensive, not only in the U.S. but around the world. Yet these speakers, whose roots reflect the political spectrum, are optimistic that having a fresh discussion on moral values and basic principles such as freedom of speech, a free press, and the rule of law can help bring democracy back to health. Don't miss this valuable discussion.

Global Ethics Weekly: Science Fiction, Micro-democracy, & Information, with Malka Older

Malka Older has spent time as an aid worker in Darfur, Indonesia, and Japan, as was discussed in last week's podcast, but she also has another role: science fiction novelist. Her latest book, "State Tectonics," is the third in a series that explores the concepts of "micro-democracy" and a "global information management bureacracy" in the near future. How have separatists from East Timor to Catalonia influenced Older's novels?

Unlocking the Potential of Young Working Women in the Middle East and North Africa

Through the story of Fatima AlRiami, a doctor in Yemen, Mariel Davis of Education for Employment not only illustrates some of the challenges that young women face in entering the workforce in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), but also highlights the potential of those who do make it into the labor market.
